Strobist fun with Paulcoxphotography workshops

Last Sunday was my first workshop in my new studio location in Stockport.  It was quite a change from my old space which is a 6 sq m studio to nearly 400 sq m with huge windows and the potential for great natural light, weather permitting of course.

This workshop was the best attended to date with 9 enthusiastic photographers and 2 lovely models.  After introductions we worked our way through various headshot lighting set-ups from purely natural light to 4 speedlights plus natural light.  We were able to see how the rim, key and fill lighting all affected the results as I was shooting tethered to a computer.  Here are a couple of samples, firstly using 2 speedlights and a natural rim light.

Secondly a cool look for all 5 lights (4 speedlights and daylight)

We moved on from here to apply the lighting to full length fashion images and then, after lunch, it was the students turn to apply what we learnt in the morning.  By working in 2 groups everyone had a chance to work with both models and get some individual images for their portfolios.

It was a fun day for me and hopefully everyone who came and I look forward to the next one.  Please let me know if you’re interested in attending and also any themes for future workshops.  In addition I’m also offering individual tuition for only £40 an hour including studio and flash equipment.  Simple bring your camera and a model!  Please contact me for further information.

Invest in Glass….

It’s often said that you should ‘invest in glass’ which is very true. However ‘invest’ to me means spend wisely rather than buy the best of what is currently available. This is particularly true now that lens prices have increased so much of late so thought I’d share my experiences with some of the lower priced glass. My experience is based on Nikon but bargains are no doubt available for other mounts as well.

Best of breed – Nikkor AF DC 105mm f/2

Best price new – £750

Alternative – Nikkor 105mm f2.5

Purchase price – £114

Saving – £636

Pros

  • Sharp as sharp can be
  • Draws the scene beautifully – great bokeh
  • Built like a tank (I dropped mine almost as soon as I bought it on to the pavement, dint in the filter ring but otherwise works perfectly)
  • Small and light
  • Meters just fine on the Nikon pro (D3 etc) and semi pro (D300 etc) line

Cons

  • You lose just over half a stop compared to the newer lens
  • It’s manual focus which even on full frame can take some getting used to
  • Metering isn’t supported on the ‘non pro’ Nikon range

Best of breed – Nikon AF-S 200mm f/2G ED-IF VR

Best price new – £2900

Alternative – Nikon 180mm f2.8 AF
Purchase price – £205 (ebay 2004) still available new at £582 but plenty on ebay close to the price I paid

Saving – £2695

Pros

  • Stunningly sharp lens with great bokeh
  • AF plenty fast enough for most things
  • Well built metal bodied lens
  • For the focal length it’s quite light

Cons

  • No VR (use flash to mitigate lack of VR)
  • Newer lens is even sharper
  • You lose a whole aperture stop which makes focus in dark places more tricky
  • Focus is much slower than the newer lens
  • You lose 20mm but if that’s an issue steer well clear of most zooms!
  • You can sometimes get a touch of CA

Best of breed – Nikon AFS 300mm f2.8 G ED VR II

Best price new – £5000

Alternative – Nikon 300mm f4 ED AF (not the current f4 lens)
Purchase price – £475 (ebay Oct 2009)

Saving – £4525

Pros
Very well built metal bodied lens
Comes with a great hard case and tripod foot
Nicely sharp with good bokeh

Cons
Slow to focus, but accurate when it does
No VR
Wont be as sharp as the newer lens
You lose a whole aperture stop

So as you’ll see there are some bargains to be had out there. Obviously a more realistic comparison for the 300mm in particular is the current f4 version which is only 100% more expensive than the older version but doesn’t meet the ‘best of breed’ criteria. Incidentally the first 2 lenses in particular are often included in lists of the best ever Nikon lenses so don’t think you’ll be compromising on quality.

Advice for new models

Much of my work is for people who want to have a few nice pictures or have a ready outlet for the images such as dancers and actors. I’m happy to shoot models as well of course but you need to think long and hard about your potential market before investing in images. This page gives lots of really useful advice for new models, it’s US biased but in large part true in the UK as well.

As noted in the article the backbone of the modelling industry are commercial models and this is the area of work most models are likely to be suited to.

Most work for models comes via agencies but with so many out there it is difficult to know where to start when looking for representation so here are some local ones that are land based (as opposed to only on the internet) and have real clients.

PHA model and casting agency

Boss Real (see also the main Boss agency linked from there)

Industry people (see also the casting agency linked from there)

Nemesis

I’m sure there are more but these are certainly the main ones close to me. In most cases if you’re stopped in the street or the agency is only web based you wont be dealing with one of the top agencies.

Hope you found this short article helpful and please tag / link / share it if you did.

Do you shoot men? Yes I do!

I’m often asked whether I photograph men as well as women, so here is proof that I do. Paul came to me looking for some images and I was happy to help. Any other guys out there needing images similar to this check my rates here and get in touch!
