I’ve recently started doing one to one training, now that I have more time in Manchester and easy access to Hallam Mill Studio. Yesterday Dan came to see me for some help with lighting. He had many years of natural light experience but wanted a little help with flash. We were lucky enough to have Carole model for us, we’ve worked together before and you can see more of our images on my Flickr Stream

We started out with a basic headshot and built up the lighting to include key, rim and fill until we ended up with this

I took the iPad with me and we found the ability to see the images on there, transmitted from the camera by the eye-fi card, really useful. You can read more about this set-up on my earlier blog post here

We then applied the skills learned in the headshot set-up to other settings such as full length and 3/4 shots such as this one.

All our lighting was done with Strobist style kit, using small ebay softboxes, Manfrotto Nano stands, Nikon SB800s and Alien Bees PLM brollies.

One to one training can be tailored to your particular needs so any photographers that are interested in something similar please drop me a line. The training and studio time is only £45 an hour and you can either supply your own model or I can find one for you with no mark up.

We’ve all seen them in supermarkets, buy one tin of soup get another free, well now I’m bringing something similar to my portfolio work. If you can find yourself a mate who also wants images taken at the same time then I’m offering £60 off each of your full shoot costs (you pay £100 instead of £160 each for the shoot). Even better, if you commit to buy more than 10 images from the shoot then you can have them at half price (£10 each instead of £20). This offer will last all summer. How long will summer last? I’ve no idea

A couple of really interesting shoots so far this year, as well as a recent training event, have made me think a little more about what I am trying to do with my photography. In essence it’s about giving clients the very best images, but we need to look in more detail than that because I’m not the right photographer for some projects and equally I’m only likely to appeal to a select set of clients.

Who am I trying to appeal to? Essentially anyone who wants unique images in the areas I specialise in. I teach other photographers how to light creatively and that’s one of the qualities I bring to a shoot. I’ve also a track record of providing dancers, singers and actors with images that really stand out from the norm as well as the required industry headshots. Very few of the people in my portfolio would describe themselves as professional models, most come from a dance or theatre background and many have no inclination to model professionally at all.

Clients then are likely to be finishing theatre school / dance training, wanting a boost to their professional portfolio or recording a significant moment in their lives. Two of the best shoots I’ve done recently were with guys who had got themselves in to great shape and wanted some images to record that fact, one for a job application and the other simply because they could.

Who isn’t likely to want me to photograph them? I make no secret of the fact I’ve no interest in wedding photography, there are people far better qualified who will do it better than I. For a generic family photograph a high street photographer is generally a better option. Most importantly though, I’m not seeking out the bargain basement end of the market either. I know some photographers will, for a pittance, give you a CD of all images from the shoot for you to do with what you will. As the saying goes though ‘buy cheap, pay twice’. My photography is about giving you something that most other photographers can’t, be it lighting, creativity, image quality or simply a unique space to shoot in (the studio I use is an old warehouse of some 4000 sq ft). Having said that I understand that in the current climate not everyone has the resources to devote to a shoot of their own, in the next post therefore I’m launching a summer offer to give you a significant discount if you bring along a friend.

In conclusion then I hope you, as potential clients, see from my portfolio whether I can help you get the imagery you want. You certainly don’t need to have aspirations toward the world of modelling, simply a desire to have a record of something unique. Please get in touch if you think I can help.

I’m holding my first model portfolio day on the 11th July 2009 at my studio in the historic Islington Mill in Salford (see Islingtonmill.com for more info on the building).

This will be a full day event for up to 4 models (or anyone who thinks they might want some nice pics!) and the day will be divided in to 4 ‘sets’, you just choose the ones you want and come along at those times. You can even chill out with us in between sets if you like.

Set 1 – Pink (from 11:00 – 12:00)

Everyone seems to like pink and this set gives you the opportunity to get some lovely girly / sexy images of you against a pink background. Bring along nice summer dresses, frilly undies and lots of nice accessories to suit this look and you’ll get some great images. We even have some pink roller skates (in size 5).

Set 2 – CK FTW (from 12:30 – 13:30)

We all love Calvin Klein and their stunning black and white adverts. In this set you’ll get the chance to get images like that with you in them. You’ll need jeans (obviously LOL) boy shorts, black bra etc.

Set 3 – Graffiti background (from 14:00 – 15:00)

A bit more ‘urban’ in this set which will either be against my own graffiti background or in a derelict part of the mill depending on availability and the weather. There are so many possibilities here from the contrast of a posh frock to some really gritty fashion pictures.

Set 4 – Smoking! (from 15:30 – 16:30)

We’ve left the best ’til last. This set is using our very own smoke machine to create unique and very sexy images. Let you imagination run wild with black undies, wet look leggings, corsets and big hair!

What it costs

The shoot costs £50 and you can choose 2 of the sets above in that price. Makeup by a professional and very experienced make-up artist is a further £35. If you want to do more than 2 sets add £35 (shoot and makeup) per set.

What you get

In the days following the shoot all the images will be posted to your own private web page so you can choose the ones you like. You get a free 12 x 8 print and digital image included in your shoot price and any additional images are £20 each.

The finished images are professionally finished in Photoshop to make you look your best. This doesn’t mean that they are blurred like you see on so many other sites but rather professionally retouched to the highest standard.

To book just drop me a line on studioday@paulcoxphotgraphy.com and a £20 deposit either by PayPal or Google Checkout secures your place.

Please note – all digital files are supplied by download to keep our overheads low and to give you the best service (no chance of it getting lost in the post!) The file will remain online for you to download again should you need to for at least 12 months from the date of the shoot. If you however you do require a CD we’ll be happy to supply one containing the images you have purchased for an additional £20 inc P&P.

Copyright information - All images remain the copyright of the photographer. Images cannot be used commercially, sold or used for publication without written instruction or negotiation with the photographer. Essentially even though you have paid for the photoshoot and prints you never own the images, this is basic copyright law. Images can only be used on agency websites, personal portfolios or anything which is strictly for personal promotion.
