In October I’ll be launching a couple of new workshops, these are available for booking in the workshops section of the site but thought I’d discuss them in a bit more detail here. On the 1st October I’ll be launching a new water photography workshop. I had to stop doing my previous workshop when I changed studio as I no longer had access to the derelict space I was using. This new workshop is set in a traditional studio but I build I temporary set. This has practical advantages in that it’s clean, warm and there is access to the kind of facilities you’d expect in a studio. I’ve not had a huge amount of time to play with the new set as yet, but Emma and I had an hour or so the other day and managed to get these images

For all you Strobists out there, I used speedlights for the above images so you don’t need expensive lights and modifiers to create similar images.

The next new workshop is on the 16th October and develops the techniques from the original dance workshop, this time with a street dance theme. I’ve wanted to shoot more street dance for some time now and it’s great to have the opportunity to do so in these workshops. Full detail of this workshop is here but here’s an example of the type of images we’ll be capturing.

New workshop – lighting and digital workflow

Quite a few people have expressed an interest in my digital workflow and in particular how I use Capture One. It’s not feasible right now to do classroom style tuition but I thought there might be some interest in it as part of a lighting workshop on the 26th September.

I’m really excited about the capabilities of Capture One v5 and have recently been going through some old RAW files to see how much improved the workflow is and how little I need to use PhotoShop as a result. I’ll share this knowledge with you as part of the workshop.

Prior to the workflow section we’ll work through the use of lighting from basics to the more creative side and you will have to opportunity to work the our resident model for the day.

Off camera flash workshop in Ford, West Sussex

Strobist fun with Paulcoxphotography workshops

Last Sunday was my first workshop in my new studio location in Stockport. It was quite a change from my old space which is a 6 sq m studio to nearly 400 sq m with huge windows and the potential for great natural light, weather permitting of course.

This workshop was the best attended to date with 9 enthusiastic photographers and 2 lovely models. After introductions we worked our way through various headshot lighting set-ups from purely natural light to 4 speedlights plus natural light. We were able to see how the rim, key and fill lighting all affected the results as I was shooting tethered to a computer. Here are a couple of samples, firstly using 2 speedlights and a natural rim light.

Secondly a cool look for all 5 lights (4 speedlights and daylight)

We moved on from here to apply the lighting to full length fashion images and then, after lunch, it was the students turn to apply what we learnt in the morning. By working in 2 groups everyone had a chance to work with both models and get some individual images for their portfolios.

It was a fun day for me and hopefully everyone who came and I look forward to the next one. Please let me know if you’re interested in attending and also any themes for future workshops. 3rd Lighting workshop – 15th May

This workshop allows you to practice both ‘strobist’ style and studio lighting and participants will have an opportunity to shoot with each of the 3 lighting set-ups.

2nd lighting workshop – 28th March

I held my first lighting workshop on the 28th February in Islington Mill. Despite the cold weather myself and 5 other photographers had a great time working with Emma and trying out some of my lighting ideas. The above is a sample of one of the shots I took while setting up the lighting. I’ll try and add some links to the other photographers work also and as a start here’s a link to Mark Byrne’s blog with some images he managed to get from the day. Great effort Mark!

I’m planning on holding a second workshop on the 28th March following the same format and again using Emma as the model. There are 6 places available. Any photographers who would like to take part please drop me a message and your place is confirmed on payment of the £40 deposit (which is returnable up to 7 days prior to the workshop). Total cost is only £90 including a light luncheon. My previous post here outlines what will be covered during the day.

Lighting workshop

I’ve had a few request recently to run workshops so thought I’d offer one on the 28th Feb and see what level of interest there is.

This would be a small workshop of between 4 and 6 photographers primarily experimenting with lighting around 3 main themes.

Firstly headshots, for this we will be looking to use lighting to create a natural look. You’ll need a reasonably long lens or (if you shoot Nikon) you can use mine. This is the kind of thing we’ll be doing.

Secondly we’ll be creating effects with lighting despite the weather! In the example below it was a cold, dull day with barely any daylight.

Finally we’ll use the water set and create images like this

The shoot will last about a day and refreshments will be provided. The location will be my studio building..
