Lighting workshop

The intention of this workshop is to take a small group of photographers (no more than 6) through 3 lighting set-ups. This gives you the chance to learn about the type of equipment I use, the techniques I employ and how I work with models. Photographers of all levels will get something out of the workshop but you will need a DSLR, have a basic understanding of shutter speed, aperture, ISO and how to move the focus point on your camera.

During the course of the day you will be able to take some pictures using the various lighting set-ups and our resident model for the day but think of this primarily as a way to pick up techniques that you will later apply to your own shoots.

The session will start at 10:30am with a short talk on the basic kit that I will be using. Much of the day will be spent using a ‘strobist style’ approach and we will look in detail at what equipment this entails. There is also opportunity to discuss with fellow photographers any cost saving tips they have found.

The first shoot will be a simple natural looking portrait. I will discuss setting up the main light, use of a reflector and also bring in a secondary light source to use as a hair light. Here is a shot I took whilst setting up during an earlier workshop.

After a brief wash-up of this session we will break for lunch a variety of sandwiches etc will be served buffet style.

The second shoot of the day will deal with us using gels to control the look of our images, we will balance natural light with 2 flash light sources and aim to get a nice warm sunset effect regardless of the weather! Here is a sample from a recent shoot using this technique.

Our final session will be a recreation of the famous scene from Flashdance. We will learn the concept of using rim light and controlling it so it emphasises the water, you can later apply this principle to other features in your images.

A final wash-up brings the workshop to a close. The cost of the workshop is £90 and we would aim to finish around 3pm.

I’ve not yet set the date for the next workshop but please get in touch and I’ll email you when I do.
